The Life, the Media and the UN..

So basically, if you try and not show the stuff about the Government's misdeeds (ref. Prabhu Chawla, Barkha Dutt, blah blah on 2G scam in India), people will talk about you stuff like, "Media is up to no use, they are not trustworthy... Blah blah blah". You will be called to various media trials were you can save your ass by being vociferous. People will forget and people will start watching the Sabse Tez Channels again..

On the other end, if you do show the stuff about the Government's misdeeds (ref. Julian Assange, Wikileaks), they will come after you after travelling n nations (Sweden? Shit!) on some really really random crime (Surprise sex?? That is basically, if you are having sex and the girl doesn't want it any more right in the middle of it, if you don't stop, you are committing a crime and these are "rape charges". Imagine, how do you prove it? Trust the girl?) and that really really random crime will get you declared wanted by the Interpol in a week's time searching through the whole of the world and you might not breathe the free air again at least for the next 4-5 years (40-50 years?).

Does anybody anywhere remember, Interpol searching for people who are surely involved in Gang Rapes, Dawood Ibrahim, or for that matter Anderson of Bhopal gas Tragedy? in 1 week? (Bastards!)

Just, surprised to see the scale of activity going on against this poor bloke.. What US Govt might have promised Sweden, to get him? Wondering, if the Interpol is really their puppet? Wondering, are we all getting brainwashed..
And wondering what can we do? Sit and watch and read? I hate this world...

My life & The Ayodhya Tragedy

-- The following incidents are real and NOT fictitious

It is five days to the Ayodhya Babri Masjid case still, my msg tone beeps at night 12. One of my local friend, who keeps on sending me some really cute messages, sends me a message, "Mandir toh RamJanmaBhoomi mein hi banega".. Another beep, "Hindu mein eka hoga, toh Taj Mahal tod kar Hanuman Mandir banayengey.." I call him up at that late hour, and ask him the reason, why he has been sending such messages. He told me that some local politician had been canvassing students to do such shit. I was wondering, if I was soon going to receive messages from Muslims too, taking the oaths to build mosque at the disputed place. Mind you, this is Barwaha, the place is still a full thousand kms away from Ayodhya.

Next day, my mum's worried about me and my brother. She says, "Bhopal mein mahaol bilkul achchha nahi hai" (conditions are not too good in Bhopal) My dad says, "Beta, ghar par hi rehna, yeh maarne kaatne waale hindu, muslim poochh kar nahi maarte." (Son, please stay at home, this rioters don't ask your caste before killing.")

So, I probe into why a normally reasonable guy like my friend, is so aggressive on this front. I have come up with two conclusions/beliefs, to which many more may be added:

The first issue which I have is with the disputed land being called as RamJanmaBhoomi (birth place of Shri Ram).
Confusion still remains as to whether, it really was the birth place of Lord Rama or not, one of the key statements of the dispute. In fact, it seems unbelievable, that any body can ever ascertain the birth place of Lord Rama. To be true, I find it ridiculous of Greeks to believe that Zeus ever existed, but then, my conscience reminds me that similar things should hold for Ramayana too. If I can't prove that Ramayana really did exist, how can I prove that it was the birth place of Lord Rama. Leave apart Ramayana, people can't even prove that Jesus Christ, who was just 2000 years back actually existed, how can you even attempt to prove something which goes as far back as 8-14k years back.

Ironically though, everyone, who has anything to gain from creating this divide, would tell you that it is the birthplace of Shri Ram, it simply is. This makes the land dearer to the Hindus, and helps them fetch more votes. If only, media had stopped calling it RamJanmaBhoomi and starts calling it "the disputed land", half the drama could have been stopped. If there has ever been an inflammatory word spoken in Indian history, it was labelling the disputed land, Ram Janma Bhoomi. There are people are willing to pay more charity to a ashram affiliated with the birth of Shri Ram, than to their own children. There are enough people, many of whom are some baba x-dev, who depend on Ram Janma Bhoomi, for their million dollar bank balances. And the effect just showed itself to me, when my friend said "Ram Janma Bhoomi" mein Ram ka mandir banega.

The second issue is what was there and what should be there.
Both the sects have developed affection for the place. Hindus regard it sacred, Muslims regard it sacred. None of them wants to lose it. Both the sects have faulted, and both have been wronged at some point or the other. Everybody knows that, yet no solution is achieved.

Despite many a meetings, no solution is achieved, In fact, it turns out that there is simply no scope of potential agreement, because "the leaders" don't want an agreement. None of them wants even charitable hospitals and schools to be build in stead.
The day, there is an agreement, VHP would lose it's charm of Hindu aggression, which has kept it alive for these many years. It has worked for years, to associate the words Jai Shri Ram, with Praveen Togadia and L K Advani, to pay it off politically. The Muslims Committee, has got this issue, as it's reason for survival. Since, our leaders would soon be unemployed, if they run out of issues, they don't want an agreement. The Congress too, prefers sitting idle, as messing up with either sects, can cause loss of vote bank. Bloody local college leaders are using Ayodhya to win college elections. How can one hope for a settlement?

Thus, to me it seems, for this problem, there simply isn't a solution. The day, there is a result, somebody will feel cheated, robbed of his religious beliefs. A lot of somebodies, unfortunately. And here we are. Securities on high alert, with peace requests pouring in from all sides. Parents worried about their children and vice versa. In all probabilities, another countrywide riot on cards. An uneasy mind thinks, the best way to keep peace on this front would have been to keep on postponing the results till eternity. Alas! Unlike plenty of other places, our judiciary has completed it's proceeding on this unsolvable one, and going to give results in two day's time from now.

I just pray that Lord Ram and Prophet Muhammad should themselves come, and look at the mess created in their names. I have plenty of Hindu, Muslim friends back there at home, and I worry for all of them. I have my family and relatives back there at home, and I am worried for all of them. No matter, who wins this battle of Ayodhya, India loses. I lose. Like plenty of my friends, I don't care, whether there is a Temple or Mosque in Ayodhya, all I want is my near and dear ones are safe. And my dad said, "Yeh kaatne waale, hindu, muslim nahi poochhte"

A bit of history:
The fight over the disputed land goes as far back as 1850, and wikipedia suggests that there was an interesting (rejected) verdict on some case, on the same issue in 1886,
"I found that Masjid built by Emperor Babur stands on the border of the town of Ayodhya…. It is most unfortunate that Masjid should have been built on land specially held sacred by the Hindus, but as that event occurred 358 years ago it is too late now to remedy the grievance. All that can be done is to maintain the parties in status quo. In such a case as the present one any innovation would cause more harm and derangement of order than benefit."
In 1992, against the orders of the Supreme Court of India, the demolitions of the Mosque was carried out by the VHP and (allegedly) the BJP.

(On a side note, the Mughals had plenty of other wrongdoings too. The Sikhs took to the Five Ks, to prevent the massacre of the Sikhs by the Mughals. They destroyed the Taxshila University, and what not.)
(Just wonder, if everybody starts avenging them. Or for that matter, England ruled us for 350 years, "let's revenge them" wouldn't be an interesting prospect.)

Work Satisfaction

Most of the people, I have been meeting in the corporate world, talk about job satisfaction. Most of them on probing a bit more would tell me something like "You know, you should enjoy your job.", "There are some cons to the job, but most importantly you are working with highly intelligent/successful people", "The job might be consuming, but it pays well..", "This will lead to success in the corporate world". By their words, I feel like the idea of Job Satisfaction is like religion's idea of getting into heavens and I have to endure a lot to achieve divination.

I was just about to accept "Satisfied with job" as the truth of the world, just when I decided to go home for a vacation. In the flight, the person sitting next to me, named Ram Maheshwari, happened to be a retailer in clothing, and seemed roughly 3-4 years older than what I am. After initial bit of chit chat (and a couple of comments about the air hostess), we started talking business. He says, "Dost, business mein mazza (read maj-ja) hai. Maine 4 saal pehle papa se thoda paisa udhaar le kar dukaan shuru ki. Roz dukaan ka kharcha dekha, mehnat ki, aaj meri do dukaaney hai, aur abhi main wholesale ka kaam shuru karne waala hoon aur kal 65 lakh ki jameen kharidi. Mehnat karo, dimaag lagao, khush raho." He continued, "Main achchha khasa kama leta hoon, ma papa ka ashirwaad hai sir par, bhai ko bhi kaam par laga diya, saal mein 2 baar apne gaao ghum kar aate hai full family.. Life mein bahut maj-ja hai.."* The one line, which was ultimate killer was, "Apna customer, apna bhagwaan.. (Customer is God!)"

We talked for about 1.30 hrs, which was mostly him speaking, ranging from his experiences as a kid to his experiences in business, and I was more than just interested in his talks. I was enjoying his passion towards his shop. I realized that this guy doesn't speak the word "Satisfaction" simply because, he is one step ahead of it. He is enjoying his business.

Pretty much impressed and happy that my myth about "Job Satisfaction" was broken, I went home. There, I found a lot of people, who were telling me stuff like, "business mein paisa nahi hai (there is no money in business)". Once, again, poor old me starts getting confused. Then, 6th day at Indore, I found another highly highly satisfied wholesaler, who would explain me everything regarding his business in half an hour. When I sat down in the car, thinking about these two sectors of business, I did a bit of analysis. During the analysis, I realized one thing, almost everyone who was blaming lack of money in business had noticeably major flaws in his own business strategy** and they were blaming lack of money for the faults of their own. Notably though, none but one complained about huge work hours required by business life. (Actually, even the one who complained wasn't the businessmen himself, it was his wife complaining the amount of time he gave to his family..)

Thus, came the most important learning from this vacation, the huge difference between the most satisfied businessmen and the most satisfied employee, I have seen. The most satisfied employee, I have ever seen, is a colleague of mine, who is really enthusastic about his work but even he would say stuff like, "After 8 hours of highly efficient work, I just won't feel like doing any more". And almost everyone who says he has a good job will almost invariably have a but, though, etc. Mr Ram and Mr Rahul would simply say, "Business is awesome fun!".

On the spiritual side, the conclusion led to the already well known fact, everybody is happier working for himself.
On the emotional side though, the realization led to a huge problem. For a guy as self-concerned as I am, I started thinking, I simply can't be as happy as they are :( :( :(..
Oh God! Not the I can't be as happy loop again... Plzzzzzzzzzz....

*(Translated to English: "Friend, business has got some real fun. I started 4 years back, borrowing some money from my father. I managed the shop's expenses, interests, worked hard, I own two shops now, and am starting wholesale soon and purchased lands worth 6.5 million yesterday. Work hard, use thy brain, enjjoyy... I earn pretty much well enough, parents' blessings are with me, brother has joined me with the business.. We go to our native village twice every years.. Life is fun!" ).
**(Most of them were doing businesses in saturated markets, where there were more sellers than buyers, whereas, in the first case, Mr Ram had a pretty good market for clothes in Pune, while Mr wholesaler was a part of a duopoly, one of the two major sports wholesalers in the main market of Indore")

PS: Luckily, Mr Ram gave me an half an hour of fundae session too, on how to start a business.. "Bhai, main 10vi pass hoon, par business mein kitna nafa-nuksaan ho sakta hai, kitna market hai, puri research karke rakhta hoon, pichhle 6 mahine se wholesale market ki research kar raha hoon, ab final kiya hai"

Need of a better measure of inflation

Anshum's analysis:
We calculate inflation over a period of 12 months.. So, the ~10% rate in June is essentially between July 2009 to June 2010..
Now look at this: We had ~3-4% inflation last October. we had a horrible November December following which, rates rose to 13%. Now, it is somewhat on 10%. What is worrying is, as soon as we reach December end, all our concerns about the "high" inflation rate should get over, because, the rates haven't been increasing frantically from Jan to June, it rose in Dec and prices are stable there since..

Now, I am wondering, are we both wrong, or are we all wrong when we are worried about inflation?

Work

Last night, a thought came to my mind,
Why work, all I do has to be left behind,
After all, at the end of the game,
The king and the pawn go back to the same box.

Today, the inner voice replied, the tone, stern yet kind,
Telling me, it's the time to toil hard and grind,
"The excuse you have given, is blind and lame,
Now is the time to have eyes of an eagle and ears of a fox,
For this isn't the end; it's the time of the game,
This is where the pawn sucks and the king rocks.. "

PS: The quote
"at the end of the game, the king and the pawn go back to the same box." doesn't belong to me. I read it somewhere..

Something for the to be sophomores...

I am pretty sure, that you would be wondering how the next three years of my life are going to be. Lots of enthu towards courses, even more towards extra currs. Here are a few things, which I think would help you in the time to come. I am writing in a language which has an emphatic tone over suggesting one, because I strongly believe that this things did benefit a lot and some are stuff which I will expect from you guys:

1. Respect the M Techs:
This is the first and foremost thing which we should be taught in our freshie year. However, we are taught stuff on the contrary. And there is a good deal of arrogance amongst us when it comes to them. However, it is wise to learn that some of them are as sharp as we are, some of them sharper and most of them are pretty much affable. Don't let one or two effing TAs interfere with your views for the whole group. (Most of you already have and some of you will learn soon that TAs are a bit of pain in the ass... :P. One of the MTechs eventually told me that so are us for them... :)).

2. Don't do RG giri: Trust me, there is no gain by being an RG. The best topper is one, who gets a ten for himself, and tries to help others get a 10 too. I have been lucky enough to be in the company of such a person, and I am sure, that all of my batchies have a great respect for him. Always help others, share knowledge. Once you are labelled an RG, people won't share their stuff with you either, so you are at a loss anyways. And at least, try to help any one you know of who needs help for passing a course.

3. Composition of project teams: No project team, should consist of all 'good' members, i.e. people who normally crack projects. A project team of size > 3 should ideally consist of at least half weak members. This benefits everyone. The 'good' guys learn how to manage, and the weaker guys get to know the technical stuff. You might suffer once or twice a grade or so may be, but if you believe me, in the end, the experience is worth it. And especially helps junta who would otherwise perform badly a chance to improve.

4. DO NOT CHEAT: Please please don't cheat. It is a real shame to see some of the India's top 100s cheating in an assignment. Anyways, our department is strict and usually people get caught, lot of them getting FRs. Trust me, a grade down in a 3 credit assignment is not worth risking an FR or selling your honesty for that matter.

5. CPI matters: like hell. If you are to app, CPI matters, if you are to go for a good job, a decentish cpi is a must. Even IIMs consider your academic record, when you go for the interviews. So, just pay a decentish attention to courses. It is very easy to crack courses in CSE even if you study only the day before the exam. Most of the profs give 7-8 quite cheerfully and you just don't have to be below average.

6. Last but not the least, have fun. Do what you feel like, learn what you feel like. By one personal experience, don't take anything for the sake of resume. Your resume will take care of yourself, if you enjoy what you are doing..

C yaaoooo....

Tragedy of IITians

Bored of reading novels about IIT life?? Even more bored of reading about how IITians live?? I am pretty much sure you agree to the fact that these bloody geeks, full day muggers, specs-bearers, all they ever do is to solve equations; studying day in and day out, making life hell for everyone.
Well, so here it is, a real life conversation, between two IITians (you know, two of those top 50 geeks, muggers), on which courses to take: (uncensored version, except wherever mentioned)

Sanyam: ya
me: which courses are you taking?

Sanyam: kaunsa course h

Sanyam: ditch

Yaar baithe baithe lecture bolta hai [yeah, that's true]
Sanyam: hmm

1:54 AM me: abey koi xyz se poochho yaar
Allow kar de toh sahi hai

Now read the first para again... ;)

{After you have read the first para... } Poor us. Simple fellows, taking blames and abuses for no fault of ours.. :(

Bal Thackrey: The latest comment

Here is the latest action from Mr Thackrey, "The Australian players shouldn't be allowed in Mumbai in response to the racist attacks on Indians in Australia.".
The point being, if Mr Thackrey was to be even a single bit logically consistent, then, even Sachin Tendulkar shouldn't be allowed inside Mumbai, due to the racist attacks on "Indians" in Maharashtra by the MNS and Shiv Sena. Now, that's a pretty bad prospect, isn't it?? :(
Mr Thackrey, please reconsider your statement, or even better, consider your age and let poor Uddhav do something.
(Hopefully, no one in Australia ever heard or read about Mr Thackrey's comment, and even if someone did, they never wrote it, like I am doing.. :P)

IPL-3 - Exclusion of Pakistani Players

Dear Foreign Ministry of Pakistan,
Hello and warm wishes. Hopefully you are fine and alive.
I recently read about your views that the exclusion of players from your country from IPL-3 is a fault of the Indian Government and that it will strain the relations between the two countries. Well, I agree, perfectly with the fact that it will increase the tension a bit, but apparently they are high anyways.
What actually surprises me is the latest statement by your PM saying that you can't curb any attacks of the sort of 26-11 and I must say that the statement was made at a very unfruitful time.
Now, let's see. Some militants hi jack a plane from our country, and we ask you to hand them over to us, you don't. People trained in your country attack our Parliament, and are running free in your country. We handle you lists of 23, 42, 50 terrorist every year or so, and the extremely supportive Pakistani Government does nothing. Let's look at the latest, we ask you for the planners of 26-11 and the best you do is to lock them in their bloody own cozy homes for what, 2-3 months. The following statement was made on some particular terrorist, not so much in the past, "He is a citizen of Pakistan, and proceedings would be run in Pakistani jurisdiction. No handing over to India."
Even after a lot of happenings, the neat way in which you guys have put the blame on the Government of India, a brilliant step diplomatically and I must congratulate you for the same. I mean seriously, what if 200 people died in the Mumbai attacks, we must allow the Pakistani players in our country. Not just the players, we must also start allowing the guests and of course, the 'citizens of Pakistan' (nothing personal with the Pakistani public, it's just for their Government, and the aforementioned 'citizens of Pakistan'. Due respect to the common people over there too.) to watch the IPL-3 games. And free tickets to the Taliban accompanying them.
And I totally agree with you, that the IPL and the Indian franchisees should be severely punished. They just sacrificed millions of dollars in Pakistan, just to pay their tribute to those who died in those attacks. I mean, who does that. And that too, at the cost of straining the relations between two nations. This is disgusting. If only, I were to have the power to do so, I would have punished them, sentenced Lalit Modi to at least two life times in prison. But unfortunately, he and the others are the citizens of India. and proceeding would be run in Indian jurisdiction, which is a bit slow as you see. Ohh never mind, it's faster than yours still.
Hopefully, you are still alive and not blown up by some bomb or suicide attack.

Regards,
A common Mumbaikar.....
